We must celebrate feats as they fall, so let’s pop the corks! Do you know that? When we Austrians celebrate something, we always drink a glass of sparkling wine. Okay, honestly sometimes we drink two glasses or a third one. It depends on how intense we have to celebrate the happening. So as you think of Christmas or New Year’s Eve most people celebrate these feasts intensively. Traditionally, we Austrians clink the glasses and say “Prost” to make every participant feel that the party or anything else will start right now. But why do we do that?

Sometimes it would be much better to drink just one glass of sparkling wine but to be honest, in some cases it will be your knight in shining armor. If you drink very quickly, you have to fear a heavy tongue, but otherwise you are preserved of talking too much with your relatives you maybe can’t stand. It’s very hard to talk while your lips stuck to a glass, you know? Well, as your aunt may talk and talk and tells you the same story as every year, you will lose your head and start to drink another glass of sparkling wine to get calm again. Thanks god, the dinner starts and you realize that your glass is empty again. But when we Austrians start eating; just guess - we clink the glasses again. And so your glass gets refilled again…
